Wuertz Farm's 8th Annual Gourd Festival February 3-4-5, 2012 Classes and vendors set up only on February 2nd, 2012 2012 Class Schedule *Registration fees include all supplies needed unless otherwise noted. *Deadline to sign up for classes is: January 20th, 2012 *If a class does not meet the minimum allowance by January 3rd, 2012, the class will be cancelled and tuition will be refunded. *Students must cancel on or before January 20th, 2012 in order to receive a tuition refund. “No shows” at the festival will not receive tuition refunds. *All classes are subject to change. *Gate entrance fee is NOT included in class price. Get over your fear of power tools while learning the basics of power carving from a skilled carver and excellent instructor. This class includes several carving techniques and also covers topics such as carving safety, types of tools and related equipment, and how to choose the right burs for different types of carving. During the class, you’ll learn to carve sand ripples, basic relief carving, and carving for stone and channel inlays. While you won’t go home with a finished product, you’ll have plenty of new knowledge and skills that are the basis for success for all your future carving projects. This class is suitable for beginners through advanced students (experienced students will be challenged with more advanced techniques.) Instructor will provide handouts, patterns, and some basic inlay supplies. |

Create the look of Indian Rock Art on a gourd using easy impression techniques. Learn how to inlay a string of Heishi and how to use TransTint dyes. In addition, you may choose to embellish your gourd with artificial sinew, beads and/or feathers. You will create a stunning gourd that will have everyone asking “How did you do that?” |

Metallic finishes are now extremely popular and many different media can be combined to create interesting finishes. This custom-designed finish featuring alcohol inks, glazes and acrylic paints makes a stunning statement when enhanced with dyed black pine needles. Instructor will share 3 design ideas- a spiral, rectilinear and trapezoid shape for creating a couching pattern on the body of a canteen gourd and then students will select one for their project. Students with choose a turquoise, magenta, lettuce or a red finish. Died black pine needles will be lashed with artificial sinew. Instructor will also demonstrate how to line the inside of the gourd with a Japanese handmade paper to conceal all the lashing on the inside. |

I have done the dirty work and now it’s your turn to have fun and weave. This is the class for you to work on your shaping skills. You will learn how to smoothly transition when you start and end your coiling and how to work with raffia. We will be using the diamond stitch for a stronger coil. The pine needles have been treated with glycerin to be “kinder” to your hands and allow greater flexibility for this design. We will be focusing on the shaping and how to increase and decrease stitches to get the shape you want them. There will be a demo on how Vickie draws the cutting line on the gourds using a template. Vickie will also talk about how she treats the pine needles with glycerin along with many other tips. |

This class is packed full of techniques. Gloria will provide all the materials needed, including your choice of musical tunes, to make this beautiful gourd music box for yourself or to give as a gift. You will learn how to choose the right gourd for the project, how to cut and prepare for the pattern layout, woodburn, carve and apply ink dyes. Intimidated by gold leafing? Gloria will walk you through it and share some secrets for successful application. You will install the musical movements; apply a brass hinge and wooden knob. With all the prep work that is done prior to you showing up to class you should take home a beautiful finished piece at the end of the day. Use your gourd shards to create beautiful textured pendants with polymer clay. Without carving or burning we can create and give your gourd pendant texture and uniqueness to your work. This class will also include learning to make some textured beads to match your pendant. Rich red coral is one of the many species of endangered coral and is hard to find…. But by making our own red corral, with a simple recipe and an easy technique we add a beautiful accent to our piece. The gourd shards provided will all be different so each finished piece will be unique. |

Using a canteen gourd, students will learn to design and carve a three-dimensional agave motif. They will learn how to cut a great fitting lid. Along with the many tips provided by the instructor during the class, students will learn how to mix and use patina finishes to give a beautiful grayish green look. The class will work also with a wrought iron rust patina finish to create a beautiful and unique metallic-looking background. Finishing up, they will learn to inlay copper wire, outlining the design, embellish the lid with a bright piece of copper and fibers giving this wonderful piece of artwork a rich and elegant finish. Beginners to advanced gourders will create a beautiful Deer Shaman Mask. No woodburning or leather dyes are used in this class. You will learn how to attach antlers to a gourd in only a matter of minutes. The face itself is created by cutting out eyes that are laced. Acrylic paint is used along with decorative metal embellishment to create a magical work of art. Students will learn how to create a long, flowing leather beard with frosted crow beads as highlights. Cleaned cut gourd, all tools and embellishments except antlers are provided for this class. You may bring your own antlers or buy on site. You should wear old clothes and layer, as we will be outside. |

A thunder gourd is basically a functional piece of art, with a spring attached to a drum head. When the spring is shaken it creates vibrations that are amplified through the gourd resembling sounds like a thunderstorm; It is impressive! During this class, Ron will share some basic techniques that he has learned along the way but focusing primarily on the process for making your own personal Thunder-Gourd. All basic supplies will be provided including a clean and ready to use gourd for completing your Thunder-Gourd, and a few different designs/patterns for you to choose from. These designs will be traced and then cut out using a Dremel and cutting bits, and then using a heat gun Ron will show you how to woodburn your design so they will stand out. He will also demonstrate how to heat shrink the synthetic drum head membrane as opposed to complicating the process using rawhide. Cutting bits will be provided, but please bring your own Dremel as well as any stains or dyes to add color to enhance your finished Thunder-Gourd. This will be your opportunity to ask any questions in regards to Thunder-Gourds so you can continue making them on your own. This class will be enjoyable an undeniably worth your time! |

The ammonite, a fossilized sea squid from Madagascar is about 135 million years old, makes a wonderful focal point when integrated into the body of a canteen gourd. The spiral pattern of the ammonite is couched onto the body of a canteen gourd with pygmy date palm. A variety of surfacing materials will be available: water based inks, oil sticks and oil paint-all colors that will compliment the ammonite. Using natural or dyed pygmy date palm, you will lash the palm with artificial sinew, linen or upholstery thread. During the class, Sue will also focus on blending inks to achieve special effect finishes; share a recipe for dying plant material; demonstrate encasing minerals in resin; and offer tips for balancing the weight of the gourd and show students how to use handmade paper to conceal the interior of the gourd. |

Colorful washi paper shapes against a black background will make a stunning gourd with an Asian influence. Petals outlined with metallic ink has been the most popular design, but frogs and other small critters cut from scrapbooking paper and a geometric design with black and white papers are both a close second. You will have your choice of papers and paper punches to create your design. Bring a pair of sharp scissors (small) and a prepped gourd (it may be whole, uncut gourd or a cut and cleaned bowl). This class features weaving with philodendron sheaths and using yarn, date palm sticks or twisted sea grass for embellishment. Clean gourd will be provided and students will use leather dyes to add color to the outside of the gourd and then coordinate that color with wax linen and embellishments. Once the design is complete students can embellish their gourd with beads, leather and feathers. |

This is a fun outside the box multi-dimensional project where you will learn to construct a wall-hanging doll that is embellished with fibers woven onto the gourd creating a unique skirt. Along with the many tips provided by the instructor during the class, you will learn to attach feathers in a staggered manner to create an eclectic and individual hairstyle. To finish up you will learn to embellish this incredible work of art with copper wire and turquoise beads, along with shards of previously torched-copper foil creating your “everyone-will-want-one” masterpiece. Make a Southwest gourd angel pin or ornament- the angel is 4” wide and 3” tall- Class will be focused on learning detail painting with acrylics/ink dyes, learning a turquoise faux finish and how to apply feathers. The gourd faces will be already woodburned so we may work indoors with the feathers. You will receive a kit that will include two gourd faces, feathers, eyelet mouth, two wooden wings, micro-brushes, glue, clay, hemostat clamp, scissors, sponges, water container and other necessary supplies. Heat guns will be provided - All you need to do is show up! You will complete one angel in class and will have the option to finish a second one if you are a fast painter or take it home to complete later. |

Beginners to advanced gourders will be provided the tools and techniques to create a mask that you will only see in a gallery!! Etching with a power tool, woodburning, leather dyes, inlay and an easy technique for adding feathers to your work of art will leave you amazed at what you have created. Please bring feathers and cabochons or purchase on site. If bringing or buying feathers before class, try not to purchase feathers with fat quills. Make sure you have longer feathers for outer band, medium length feathers for interior band and small feathers for area closest to face. Wear old clothing and layer your clothing as this class is outside. |

This is 2 classes in 1!!! And for 1 price!!! In this class students will learn how to apply a texture medium to create the look and feel of fired raku pottery. Once this texture is on the students will apply the smoke effect with paint and then build onto that the intense metallic colors using pure pigment mica powders - this is the fun part. Over 30 colors will be offered and hundreds of color combinations are possible. Handouts will be given for future reference. Once all texture is applied crushed glass will be inlayed to create a dramatic effect. The finished piece is spectacular; the photo does it no justice. Nor does it show how many color combinations are possible. |

This is a simple elegant way to do a fun project. You will learn to use the Gourd Master ink dyes and the metallic dyes. Using a permanent ink pen to do the fine lines. You will finish your gourd with pine needles for the top of your gourd. |

The foliage from the bear grass, a native Southwestern plant, is quite lovely when used as a weaving material. Each leaf is over three feet in length, so unlike pine needles you will not need to add fiber to your gauge as frequently. Instructor will share some principles for creating asymmetrical designs. Water-based inks that compliment the beige-colored fiber will be utilized to color the body of the gourd. Students will have the opportunity to prepare the bear grass. Instructor will focus discussion on beginning the coiling work, adding fiber as needed and ending the coiling. |

This class features weaving multiple rows of pine needles using the fascicle of the pine needle for decoration or pattern. Cleaned gourd will be provided and students will use leather dyes or silk dyes to add color to the outside of the gourd and then coordinate that color with the wax linen for coiling the pine needles. Once the design is complete, students can embellish their gourd with a beaded necklace. |

In this class you'll learn how to design and carve a section of "filigree" into the gourd surface and will have the option of adding design elements such as butterflies, dragonflies, etc. You'll try different carving methods and burs and should complete at least one large section in class. (Other sections may be added as time and your own skill level permits.) Take advantage of learning from a master; Bonnie will provide you with plenty of tips and tricks that will make the technique much easier and will help you create a good looking finished project. A gourd that is reasonably thick for carving. The gourd should be about 1/4" thick or more after cleaning. Cut the gourd open and clean it before coming to class. If you wish to paint the inside of the gourd, please do so before class. You will receive a handout and patterns in class. |

Using the Miriam Joy wax technique the gourd artist will create a stunning black and white gourd which features a hummingbird in flight. The gourd artist will learn the application of applying Crayola Crayon to create the humming bird and floral type design. This is a very visual creation that is both beautiful and interesting. Nature comes alive and this gourd is very pleasing to everyone’s delight. |

After soaking, the sheaths from the large-leaf philodendron are quite supple and can be utilized as a rim treatment for a medium to large gourd. Instructor will share some floral design principles so that the desert pods -- devil’s claw, cat’s claw, and jacaranda pods create a flamboyant statement. |

Use your gourd shards to create beautiful textured pendants with polymer clay. Without carving or burning we can create and give your gourd pendant texture and uniqueness to your work. This class will also include learning to make some textured beads to match your pendant. Rich red coral is one of the many species of endangered coral and is hard to find…. But by making our own red coral, with a simple recipe and an easy technique we add a beautiful accent to our piece. The gourd shards provided will all be different so each finished piece will be unique. |
