~Taking a Class~ Written By: Cheri Williams
I have been thinking about classes lately, mainly because Leah and Waylon are gearing up for their festival. Since I have taken so many classes, I wanted to pass on a few tips in case you are just now contemplating a class there or elsewhere. I recommend that when you sign up, get a list of required supplies or tools that the teacher wants you to bring. Print up the list if you can or write down all supplies. Bring all supplies needed to your class. Chances are the teacher won't have any extra for you to use. Get there a bit early. You can pick a seat that will be the best location for you and your stuff. You can avoid being in the path of others getting in or out with careful planning. You can sit near an interesting person taking the class too; they might turn out to be a lot of fun. If power tools are going to be used, quite often the teachers will bring some for your use, but if you already have that tool, you might bring it. The teacher’s tools will be shared, so if you have your own with a power pack, you can proceed and not have to wait in line for the use of someone else’s. Make sure your battery is charged also, or bring a spare. Sometimes electricity is scarce. If you are taking several classes, I recommend you bring a case to carry all your instructions, tools, apron, pencils, notebook for notes etc. Your carrying case can also carry your jacket, water, snacks, even a camera. Most of your experienced teachers will furnish an instruction packet, but if not, you will need to take notes. Also, I keep my notebook handy because these instructors are full of wonderful tips that they just pass along, and I don’t want to forget any. Sometimes these helpful hints are more valuable that the particular class you are taking. Last but not least, bring a cushion to sit on. Most of the classes are on folding chairs, and after a few hours, the seat gets pretty hard. Last year I was in a class, and there was a cushion in my seat. Well, it was wonderful, until it’s owner came in to retrieve it. Next time, I will bring my own. Be prepared to have fun. I know it sounds funny, but remember, this is a learning experience. Don’t fret because your first project is not as pretty as your teacher’s or your new friend next to you. You will get better with practice, so relax and have a good time. If you are anxious about your finished project, you will miss out on a great experience. If after several attempts later on, you are still not getting the result that you want, you can always take the class again! |
