Class Schedule 2009

*Registration fees include all supplies needed unless otherwise noted.

*Deadline to sign up for classes is: January 16th, 2009 

*If a class does not meet the minimum allowance by December 29th, 2008, the class will be cancelled and tuition will be refunded.

*Students must cancel on or before January 16th, 2009 in order to receive a tuition refund.  “No shows” at the festival will not receive tuition refunds.

*All classes are subject to change.

*Gate entrance fee is NOT included in class price.  However, you will be able to buy a 3-Day Wrist Band for only $6.00 at the front gate during the festival or from Leah Wuertz on Thursday.

Filigree Carving

Teacher: Bonnie Gibson

Supplies Needed: Dremel, Foredom or other similar rotary tool, and any burs you have on hand.  Bring a good quality dust mask.  Riffler files or sanding sticks may be helpful if you have them, but are not necessary.

In this class you'll learn how to design and carve a section of "filigree" into the gourd surface and will have the option of adding design elements such as butterflies, dragonflies, etc.  You'll try different carving methods and burs and should complete at least one section in class. 

Students should bring a gourd of any size or shape that is reasonably thick for carving.  The gourd should be cut open and thoroughly cleaned both inside and out.  If you wish to paint the inside of the gourd, please do this ahead of class time.

Students should bring a Dremel, Foredom or other similar rotary tool, and any burs you have on hand.  Bring a good quality dust mask.  Riffler files or sanding sticks may be helpful if you have them, but are not necessary. 

Carving burs, hand tools, and dust masks will also be available for purchase if needed.

Beaded Gourd Bowl

Supplies Needed: Bring a pair of scissors and a dremel type tool with a small drill bit if you have one. I will have several hand drills that students can use for drilling holes if this is a tool that you do not have.

Learn the art of beading the rim of a gourd. Students will take a cut and cleaned gourd and learn to finish the gourd with leather dyes, shoe polish or varnish. They will place and drill the holes, bead the gourd, add threads and finish the project.

Everything that you need will be provided by the instructor. This includes a cut and cleaned gourd, beads, artificial sinew, needles, tape measures, pencils and instruction sheets. Bring a pair of scissors and a dremel type tool with a small drill bit if you have one. I will have several hand drills that students can use for drilling holes if this is a tool that you do not have.

Create beautiful gourd jewelry just in time for St. Valentine's Day! Using 2 step patina, silver or copper metal leafing on a pre-cut heart shaped gourd shard. Finish with beautiful beads and a leather backing. Students will be able to wear their jewelry home.

Recycled Sari Yarn Gourd Bowl

This project is surprising easy and fun! Is leather dye looking a little boring!  Here is a class that will let you try 25 colors of inks and 13 colors of Metallic Gel Glaze and over 60 colors of Pigments to make your own custom colors. Learn how to mix and apply just a hint of sparkle to your finish. We will be using the Stewart Superior Inks and Terra Bella Gel Glazes for some very awesome warm and cools colors and effects.  You will learn how to heat set the inks and work with Metallic glazes for a sparkly effect. Students will have a choice of Recycled Sari Yarn and there are many colors to choose from. The yarn is hand spun and the way they mix the colors are so beautiful. The ball of yarn is beautiful just to look at. We will also be working with some other hand made yarns from Nepal that are spun out of plant fibers. The colors and textures are fabulous and fun to work with and give you vivid color and textures.

3-D Feather Carving

Carving an eagle, turkey, or red tailed hawk feather is a great way to learn basic dimensional carving techniques.  The concepts of visualizing high-relief dimensional carving will be discussed, and additional techniques such as undercutting, rounding and specialized carving will enable you to create a feather that is dramatic and realistic in appearance.    You may use either carving burs or wood burning to add the feather barbs, and painting methods will be discussed.  (Students will learn feather carving only.  Other decorative applications shown in the photo may be added as desired after class is over.)

Students will choose between a classic Teneriffe design or a random design using irish waxed linen and beads on the outside of the gourd. Clean gourds will be provided and students will use leather dyes to add color to the outside of the gourd and then coordinate that color with the wax linen for the Teneriffe design of their choice. Once the design is complete students can embellish their gourd with beads, leather and feathers.

Learn to create special designs on your gourd using alcohol dyes. You will discover how to control the reaction caused by the alcohol based solutions and how the use of different colors can enhance the design and create depth. You should leave the class with a finished gourd, which you can finish with an embellished rim if desired.

The doll takes 9 gourds for full construction. Kathy will have all of the cleaning done and students will be able to chose a ready doll. She will explain how all the gourds were cut and stacked. This way students have more time to learn techniques & construction instead of cutting & cleaning. Embellishments will be her leather cape,cup, basket, sticks, rope,storage pots, broom and more.

Student will choose a pattern and transfer it to the face side of the gourd. Afterwards they will use a woodburner and a rotary carving tool to bring the design to life. Drum head will be attached and material added inside to create the sound of the ocean. Students will go home with a completed ocean drum.

Tools needed for class- Woodburner and any burning pens you have (preferably a medium skew, shader, ball head); a rotary carving tool (dremel or similar tool) with carving burrs. Teacher will have carving burrs on hand for purchase before class.

Working with resist such as wax, glue or alcohol can give you some very beautiful and interesting results on gourds. In this class we will discuss and demonstrate some of these resists and then using a product called the "Masquepen" we'll create a one-of-a-kind design. This unique product gives that batik-type look without the hassle and mess of other methods. Students will have a choice of a variety of cleaned and prepped gourds to work on. We will also discuss how to further embellish your gourd by woodburning, etching, beading and more. All supplies and equipment are provided. Feel free to bring along any designs.

This class is quick and easy and will surprise you! Class will be relaxing with no stress no notes to take and just plain fun from the get go. Kathy will really surprise you with a brand new technique that she has not seen in the 10 years of her teaching and it’s so easy & inexpensive and you will laugh when we see what this magical paper is.! We all have at least one if not more hidden in a box or closet in our homes. Students will be able to choose a stamp from a variety of stamps. Kathy will have other themed stamps and papers if a dragon fly and Asian theme is not your favorite. We will be stamping on a very special paper and then adhering the paper to the gourd. We will add color with inks and use gold foils to finish the rim and any little touches you may want to put on you stamped designs. We will finish the gourd with a clear coat of Terra Bella Varnish. Students will leave class with a finished project.

Rubber Stamps And Metal Leafing On Gourds

Students will learn how to combine the use of rubber stamps and metal leaf to their gourd art that will open a new door to how they work with the two now.  In this class students will be working with ink dyes, acrylic paint, gold, silver and copper leafing.  Creating a chipped edge, using their craft knife, will finish the rim of the gourd.  Various leafing techniques and adhesives will be discussed and demonstrated in class.  Each student will leave class with a finished gourd.

Learn creative ways to use ink dyes, gel mediums, gel glazes, embossing compound, crackle, pigments, waxes, and stencils. Rather than completing a single project we will be making a sampler, focusing on learning techniques for using a variety of artist grade products. Let this class be a springboard for your creativity as we mix and match to create texture and color. We will be working with:

Ink Dyes; application techniques and blending
Gel Glazes; how to use as highlight and mixing with color
Gel mediums, Opulence; how to achieve textures from ceramic raku to hammered metal, blending, toning, stenciling
Crackle; special effects with paint and gels
Wood texture; use as embossing paste, with stencils, adding texture
Pure Color; how to use this pure pigment to create an endless custom color palette. Find out how to use Pure Color with various mediums; paint, gels, varnish, wood filler.

Peacock Feather Gourd

Supplies Needed: Dremel, Foredom or other  similar rotary tool and any burs you have on hand.  Bring a good quality dust mask, a wood burner with a skew tip, and a cleaned gourd that is suitable for carving (at least 1/4" thick is preferable). The iridescent effects will be most striking if you dye, paint or ink your gourd with a dark color before class.

Create a striking peacock feather design that includes inlaid fused dichroic glass and gold leaf accents.   You'll carve an opening to inlay a piece of prepared glass, then use a wood burner to add the surrounding peacock feather design.  Gold leaf  accents and the addition of acrylic and iridescent paints will really make  the design sparkle.
Students should bring a Dremel, Foredom or other  similar rotary tool and any burs you have on hand.  Bring a good quality dust mask, a wood burner with a skew tip, and a cleaned gourd that is suitable for carving (at least 1/4" thick is preferable). The iridescent effects will be most striking if you dye, paint or ink your gourd with a dark color before class. 
One piece of  fused glass, leafing supplies and painting supplies will be provided.  Additional glass will be available for those that wish to purchase extra pieces.    Carving burs and dust masks will be available for purchase if desired.

Extend A Gourd

This is a new and exciting first time offered class. Students will be given a completely prepped gourd so all class time will be focused on learning the weaving technique. Students will have 20 colors of dye or stained finish to choose from. Natural weaving materials of date palm fibers, coir, reeds, plant sheaths from philodendrons, rope, twine, paper rush and sea grasses will be available. Gourds will be cut in half and wooden spokes will be used to add approximately 6-12 inches to make you gourd a vase. Embellishments will be available to finish your project.

Focus On Agates

Supplies Needed: Students should bring an old towel, measure, gloves, pencil, bucket, heat tool and scissors. Also bring a lunch and beverage.

This Class Is Full!!!

In this workshop you will learn how to cast fossils and rocks in resin so that they can be laced to a gourd as a rim embellishment. A variety of surfacing materials will be available: inks, alcohol inks and leather dye- all colors that will compliment the Brazilian Agate. Using natural or dyed pygmy date palm, you'll lash the palm with sinew, wire or upholstery thread. Beads or Seeds will be added last to conceal the drill holes.

A cleaned and prepped canteen gourd, spray paints, needle, surfacing materials, dyed pygmy date palm, beads and seeds will all be provided.

Students should bring an old towel, cloth tape measure, gloves, pencil, bucket, heat tool, scissors and a drill with a 1/16" bit. Also bring a lunch and beverage.

Kathy will really surprise you with a brand new technique that she has not seen in the 10 years of her teaching and it’s so easy & inexpensive and you will laugh when we see what this magical paper is.! We all have at least one if not more hidden in a box or closet in our homes. Students will be able to choose a stamp from a variety of stamps. Kathy will have other themed stamps and papers if a dragon fly and Asian theme is not your favorite. We will be stamping on a very special paper and then adhering the paper to the gourd. We will add color with inks and use gold foils to finish the rim and any little touches you may want to put on you stamped designs. We will finish the gourd with a clear coat of Terra Bella Varnish. Students will leave class with a finished project.
